You can feel that fall is finally approaching. With temperatures starting to dip, small spurts of rain and the leaves changing, it’s the perfect time for you to protect your lawn from the coming winter months and prep for the spring. Here are some quick tips on things you can do now that will ensure a stronger, greener lawn for you to enjoy next year.
Aerate
Aeration allows air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots, helping roots grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn. One of the main reasons for aeration is to alleviate soil compaction which can be quite common after heavy summer use, making fall the ideal time to aerate and allow time for it to heal and fill in any open areas after the soil plugs are removed.
Fertilize
By fertilizing your lawn in the fall, you provide additional nutrients that strengthen the roots and can be stored as energy to protect during the cold weather. Fertilizer should be applied at least 2-3 weeks before a cold front so to allow for the plant to absorb the nutrients. Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions for specifics of use.
ADDITIONAL TIP
Compost
Don’t let your grass clippings go to waste, use them to start a compost pile along with all the other fall yard matter like fallen leaves and summer vegetable garden. Come spring, you will be all set with your own nutrient rich soil for planting. For best results, alternate layers of high carbon materials like your vegetable garden with grass clippings.
